Globalization and Remote Workforce Drive Demand for Multilingual Talent

Increased Hiring for Interpreters and Translators Projected

The global economy continues to drive demand for multilingual workers and local conditions for language services change rapidly.  The hiring landscape for interpreters and translators is projected to grow 20 percent over the next decade.

Multilingual workers often have a unique skill set that includes enhanced empathy, cultural awareness, and critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. These skills are critical in interpreting and translation work settings such as schools, hospitals, courtrooms, meeting rooms and conference centers. Working as a translator or interpreter requires high language skill levels and as the language services industry grows, both education and training opportunities must keep pace. Many of our medical and social service clients require interpreters to have a minimum of 40 hours of professional training in certification programs. The spoken language Translation and Interpreting (TRIN) Program at Century College trains bilingual students to provide professional language interpreting and translation services in multiple areas, including health care, social services, education, and legal settings. It offers a diploma or certificate option and is the state’s only college-level translation and interpreting program focused on spoken languages.

There also are excellent regional language industry resources available.  The Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association (UMTIA) is a chapter of the American Translators Association (ATA) and provides support and education for current and future language professionals. The ATA and the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) offer an online directory that lists available training, study, and degrees in translation, interpretation, and related careers.

We remain committed to supporting current and new language service professionals, and we look forward to continued collaboration with our industry partners. Learn more about our career opportunities.
