Language Access in K-12 Education Supports Positive Student Outcomes

Professional Interpreters Work Statewide with Teachers, Administrators and School Staff

Minnesota’s K-12 academic year is underway, and schools are preparing for their fall Parent-Teacher conferences.  For many limited English proficient (LEP) families, the conference may be their first point of contact with both teachers and school staff.  The need for professional spoken language services in educational settings is increasing in large part due to migration and refugee resettlement and states have federal and state language access requirements for their growing limited English proficient (LEP) populations. The National Education Association toolkit demonstrates how language access can improve equity, English language proficiency and outcomes for LEP students in educational settings.

Interpreters must accurately convey information from a source language to a target language, a skill that requires extensive training and practice beyond bilingual skills. Teachers, administrators, bilingual staff and families all benefit from understanding how to collaborate with professional interpreters.

The National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages (NAETISL) has created a living Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice document for professional language service providers in educational settings. The NAETISL highlights the importance of professional language services and its impact on K-12 family engagement and student achievement.

Our highly qualified interpreters and translators adhere to a code of ethics and demonstrate professional conduct in all settings. We provide individual school and district support for LEP general communications, distance learning, conferences, special education and due process, physical and occupational therapy, and early childhood programs. Our services offer several language delivery options including in person, face-to-face, video remote and telephone interpreting.  Contact us to learn more.
