Minnesota K-12 School Districts Welcome Multilingual Students

As Minnesota’s K-12 academic year begins, school districts throughout the state will be preparing for and providing language access to their growing multilingual student communities. Currently, St Paul Public Schools has the highest English Learner (EL) population in the state, and Minneapolis Public Schools is a close second with over 100 languages spoken by students and families

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is legally mandated to ensure language access to public and charter school Limited English Proficient (LEP) students and their families. The department is guided by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Executive Order 13166 which require all recipients of federal funds to have a Language Access Plan (LAP).  This plan is supported by providing interpreting services to students, parents and guardians, providing information in multiple languages on the school websites, and soliciting community engagement and feedback on the school’s LAP.

University Language Center provides language interpreting services to school districts statewide. We are proud of our long-term relationship with the State of Minnesota as an approved language services provider. We have been fully vetted and meet all the rigorous contract requirements.

Our experienced, professional interpreters understand the different cognitive, emotional, and academic stages of K-12 students and how these developmental benchmarks intersect with LEP children and families. We provide individual school and district support for LEP general communications, distance learning, conferences, special education and due process, physical and occupational therapy, and early childhood programs. Our services offer several language delivery options including in person, face-to-face, video remote and telephone interpreting.
